Back Carpet styles explained

Carpets come in a variety of different shapes, sizes, colours, and of course, piles.  It is important that when choosing your new carpet, that you opt for a pile type that is suitable for that particular room.

In this blog, we look into the six common styles and offer advice as to where these will work best in your home.

This type of carpet is one of the most popular options for customers. It is ideal for those looking for comfort and durability.

It is known as a twist pile due to the twisted fibres of carpet yarn which create a surface that’s hardwearing, yet has an attractive appearance, because it incorporates a combination of different shades for a multi-tonal effect (also great for making any stains look less obvious!).

If you have a hectic family life and your floors receive a lot of traffic, then a twist carpet is an excellent option.

Saxony carpets are a luxurious deep pile which feels beautiful underfoot and is perfect for bedrooms. It is made of twisted carpet fibres that stand straight with a cut loop pile. The pile is dense in order to create a soft carpet fibre.

You will find straight Saxony carpet feels similar to velvet because the fibres each sit in the same direction. You can also opt for a textured Saxony carpet which is not as soft as the straight style, however, it reflects light differently and you won’t see footprints or marks from your vacuum cleaner as much.

Loop Pile

Loop pile carpet is a sturdy option for homes, mostly in high traffic areas such as hallways, stairs and landings. It is made from uncut loops of yarn which are available both flat and textured, and therefore, have a more rugged appearance.

Whilst this style is loved by many families due to its practical and durable nature, we don’t tend to recommend it for homes with pets as their claws can get caught.

A Berber style carpet is similar to a loop pile but is cut shorter to give it a dense weave.  It is perfect for families and also landlords who have properties to let, as it is good value for money, stain resistant and durable.

This type of carpet is great for any room in the home and it is available in a huge range of colours and designs, so you will always find something to suit your style.

We also recommend this style for commercial projects as it is fantastic for office spaces.

Cut & Loop

As you might have guessed, Cut & Loop carpets combine straight cut and looped fibres which create an interesting effect within rooms.

We usually recommend this style for areas that don’t receive a lot of traffic, such as a bedroom or dining room. Wherever you have it, you’ll be delighted with the end result as it creates a comfortable environment.

There’s no mistaking this type of carpet when you see it in person - the rich texture highlights the unique light and dark shading that is commonly associated with velvet, creating a luxurious look.

Whilst it can be used anywhere within the home, we’d suggest keeping it for rooms that are well looked after, such as a master bedroom rather than a child’s room.

However, you will find that it is a pricier style but should be seen as a worthwhile investment as it can last for years and years.
